Lorikeet Info
Lorikeets are great birds to have as a pet either a hand raised or an aviary breed bird. But they do have a couple of down sides. The noise level can become very loud especially when they get excited. They love the rain, ours can become deafening on some days. They love water, they can splash and flap in a bird bath till there is no water left. They will bath on the coldest day and then sit there and shiver afterwards.

Lorikeets eat by using their specialized tongues. On the tip of their tongues they have many extremely fine hairs which they extend to eat nectar from the flowers. Lorikeets are known as squirters because they are mainly nectar eaters their droppings are not like a normal birds droppings. Their droppings are wet and runny and as the name suggest they squirt it. If you can get past that, a hand raised lorikeet can become a great companion. They are the clowns of the bird world and they love nothing more then to play.

They have a lot of strength in the feet and legs and this allows them to hang upside down on branches in the wild to feed. If you choose to have a hand raised bird you might want to think about clipping their nails as they are very sharp, this should only be done by a vet or a breeder that knows what they are doing. If caged, make sure you give them toys to play with. Bells and balls are a favourite as they can easily pick them up to play with or drag them around the cage.

We feed our lorikeets Lori dry as the name suggests it in a dry powder food, Lori wet same again but this is mixed with water, special fruit juice made for nectar eater’s, fresh fruit and plenty of clean drinking water that they are unable bath in.

There are many different kinds of lorikeets to choose from such as rainbows, red collars, scaly’s and the list just goes on.
